For a long time this was really a set of fingerpicked sequences in James Taylor-esque guitar-only mode.  In the absence of ideas for matching lyrics I began to organise the sequences into a ‘song’ structure.  It sounded strangely ‘complete’ on its own but I felt it might not be so to others who didn’t share my James Taylor history.
It was quite a relief when finally deciding NOT to have lyrics ... there’s far less effort composing and performing an instrumental. However, the decision as ever is then to determine WHICH instruments to use.  It ended up after some trial and error with the removal of the ‘light and happy’ synth and adding double bass which sometimes was a rhythmic anchor and other times melodic.
The start and end were eventually left unadorned to serve as clean-sounding bookends.
